Introduction – The UNDP’s B+HR Asia

The UNDP Asia-Pacific’s Business and Human Rights unit (B+HR Asia) plays a key role in promoting the implementation of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights in Asia.

Challenge – Businesses struggle to understand their compliance levels

Many companies in the region struggle to understand the compliance responsibilities for these principles, or the human rights regulatory regimes, that they and their business partners face in various jurisdictions. The UNDP’ Business and Human Rights unit supports governments, businesses, civil society organizations, and independent national human rights institutions in this respect, through technical advisory, awareness-raising, and capacity building support.

The solution – Design & Development of a Web-based Assessment

As part of this effort the UNDP initiated the design and development of the Human Rights Self-Assessment Training Tool website to allow businesses to identify and assess human rights risks they may be exposed to, independently and discretely. The Human Rights Self-Assessment Training Tool helps companies develop a human rights risk profile according to “Severity” and “Likelihood” metrics that are defined per industry. It produces heatmaps for each risk to help users easily understand areas for priority action.

Vimi were engaged as the design and development partner for this project and delivered a solution that utilizes the WordPress platform for content management of the website, along with a custom built assessment tool that supports the creation and facilitation of assessments, and provides participants the opportunity to receive a PDF version of their assessment via email.
